The Career

Johan Kristoffersson’s journey in motorsport began long before the first race start. Growing up in Arvika, Sweden, in a family deeply rooted in racing, the environment of workshops, racetracks, and competition was part of everyday life. His father, Tommy Kristoffersson, built Kristoffersson Motorsport into one of Sweden’s most respected teams, and it was within that environment that Johan developed both his passion for racing and his understanding of the sport.

Before focusing fully on motorsport, Johan was also a talented cross-country skier, competing at a high national level in Sweden. But the pull of racing eventually became stronger, and in 2008 he began his professional career behind the wheel, competing for the family team in touring car racing.

Before 2008

Before his professional racing career began, Johan Kristoffersson grew up surrounded by motorsport. Raised in Arvika, Sweden, he spent much of his childhood at racetracks and in the workshop of Kristoffersson Motorsport, the team founded by his father, Tommy Kristoffersson. The environment gave him an early understanding of both the technical and competitive sides of racing.

As a young athlete Johan initially pursued cross-country skiing and competed at a high national level in Sweden. The discipline and endurance from skiing would later shape his approach to motorsport. At the same time, time spent around the team and the racing world steadily strengthened his interest in driving.

Karting and early testing eventually confirmed the path forward. By the late 2000s, the focus shifted fully to racing, and in 2008 Johan began his professional motorsport career — the first step in what would become a multi-discipline journey at the highest level of the sport.

2008 – 2011

Johan’s circuit racing career began in 2008 when he competed in the Junior Touring Car Championship with Kristoffersson Motorsport, driving a Volkswagen. In his debut season he scored two race victories and finished fourth overall, immediately showing strong potential.

In 2009 he stepped up to the Swedish Touring Car Championship, effectively taking over the seat previously held by his father in the family team. While the overall results were modest, he finished second in the privateer-based Semcon Cup and gained valuable experience competing against some of Sweden’s top touring car drivers.

The following season became an important learning period. Without a full-time race seat in 2010, Johan spent much of the year working within the team during race weekends, helping with practical tasks in the garage and supporting the drivers — including working with tyres in the pits. Late in the season he returned to the cockpit for three STCC race weekends with Team Biogas.se, gaining further race experience despite a limited program.

Those early years built a deep understanding of the sport from both sides of the garage. The combination of racing opportunities, hands-on team work, and perseverance ultimately led to the next step in his career — the move into Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia in 2011, where he would begin to establish himself as one of the most promising drivers in Scandinavian motorsport.

Breakthrough Years 2011–2012

The 2011 season marked a turning point in Johan Kristoffersson’s career. Joining the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, he quickly adapted to the highly competitive one-make championship. In his debut season he consistently fought at the front and finished second overall, immediately establishing himself as one of the top drivers in the series.

Momentum continued into 2012, which became a defining year. Kristoffersson delivered an exceptional season across multiple categories, demonstrating both speed and versatility. He won the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia championship, claimed the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) title driving the Volkswagen Scirocco, and also secured the International Superstars Series championship in Italy with an Audi RS5.

Winning three major championships in the same year firmly positioned Kristoffersson among the most successful and adaptable drivers in Scandinavian motorsport, proving his ability to compete — and win — across different cars, teams, and racing formats.

Transition to Rallycross 2013–2016

After the breakthrough seasons in circuit racing, Johan Kristoffersson began shifting his focus toward rallycross. In 2013 he still competed in Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, securing another championship, while also starting to explore rallycross competition. The discipline’s intensity, short races, and mixed surfaces presented a new challenge and quickly became an exciting direction for his career.

As rallycross gained global momentum with the launch of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in 2014, Kristoffersson committed more of his efforts to the category. Competing with Kristoffersson Motorsport, he began building experience against some of the world’s top rallycross drivers. Early podium finishes and strong qualifying performances showed clear potential.

Over the following seasons, from 2014 to 2016, Kristoffersson steadily developed into one of the leading contenders in the championship. Working closely with his team, he helped develop the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar while refining his driving style for the unique demands of rallycross.

By the end of the 2016 season, the combination of growing experience, a competitive car, and a well-established team placed Kristoffersson in a strong position. The foundations were in place for what would become a historic period in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.

First World Championship Titles 2017–2018

In 2017 Johan Kristoffersson joined a new factory-backed project in the FIA World Rallycross Championship as Volkswagen Motorsport partnered with Petter Solberg and his team PSRX to form PSRX Volkswagen Sweden. The collaboration combined Volkswagen’s factory support with the experience of Solberg’s championship-winning team.

Driving the Volkswagen Polo GTI Supercar, Kristoffersson quickly became the benchmark of the championship. Throughout the 2017 season he demonstrated exceptional speed and consistency, securing multiple victories and ultimately clinching his first FIA World Rallycross Championship title before the final round of the season.

The success continued in 2018. With the same PSRX Volkswagen Sweden operation, Kristoffersson delivered one of the most dominant seasons in rallycross history. Winning the majority of the races and consistently finishing at the front, he secured his second consecutive FIA World Rallycross Championship.

The partnership between Volkswagen Motorsport, PSRX, and Kristoffersson created one of the most successful programs in modern rallycross, establishing him as the leading driver of the era.

New Challenges: Rally and WTCR 2019

After the 2018 season, Volkswagen Motorsport withdrew its factory program from the FIA World Rallycross Championship. For 2019, Johan Kristoffersson shifted his focus to new disciplines, returning to circuit racing while also expanding his rally program.

On the circuit side, Kristoffersson joined Sébastien Loeb Racing in the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR), driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR. Competing against an extremely competitive international field, he quickly established himself as a title contender. Over the course of the season he secured several race victories and consistent podium finishes, ultimately ending the championship third overall, proving his ability to immediately perform at the front in touring car racing at world level.

At the same time, he began competing more seriously in international rallying with a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. One of the highlights of the season came at Rally Sweden, where Kristoffersson won the WRC2 Pro category on home soil. The result demonstrated his adaptability once again, successfully transitioning between rally stages and circuit racing during the same season.

The 2019 season became another example of Kristoffersson’s versatility as a driver, competing competitively in both touring car racing and rallying while continuing to build experience across multiple disciplines.

Private Team Return to World RX 2020

In 2020 Johan Kristoffersson returned to the FIA World Rallycross Championship under very different circumstances. With Volkswagen Motorsport no longer involved and the global pandemic reshaping the racing calendar, the season was shorter and more uncertain than usual.

Kristoffersson Motorsport entered the championship as a private team, running a Volkswagen Polo GTI Supercar. Despite the challenges of operating without full factory backing, the team managed to build a highly competitive package and quickly proved capable of fighting at the front.

Throughout the condensed season, Kristoffersson delivered a series of strong performances and race victories. His consistency across the rounds ultimately secured him the 2020 FIA World Rallycross Championship title, marking his third world championship and the first achieved with his own team operation.

The season highlighted the strength of Kristoffersson Motorsport and demonstrated that even without factory support, the team could compete — and win — at the highest level of rallycross.

New Partnership with Audi – EKS JC 2021

In 2021 Johan Kristoffersson began a new chapter in the FIA World Rallycross Championship through a partnership with EKS, the team founded by former World Champion Mattias Ekström. The collaboration formed EKS JC, combining the experience and resources of both organizations.

The team competed with the Audi S1 RX Quattro, a car that had already proven competitive in World RX. For Kristoffersson, the season meant adapting to a new car and a new team structure while continuing to fight at the front of the championship.

Despite the challenges of building a new collaboration, the EKS JC project quickly became competitive. Kristoffersson secured multiple victories during the season and remained in the title fight throughout the year.

By the end of the championship he finished second overall in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, demonstrating once again his ability to adapt quickly and compete at the highest level regardless of team or machinery.

Return to KMS and the Electric Era 2022

In 2022 Johan Kristoffersson returned fully to the family team, Kristoffersson Motorsport (KMS), as the FIA World Rallycross Championship entered a new era with the introduction of fully electric cars.

Together with Volkswagen, KMS developed and built the Volkswagen Polo RX1e, marking a major technical project for the team as they adapted to the new electric regulations. Much of the work was carried out in-house, making the project a significant engineering effort as well as a sporting challenge.

Despite the new technology and limited development time ahead of the season, the team quickly found strong performance. Kristoffersson adapted rapidly to the electric rallycross car and delivered a dominant season, securing multiple victories and ultimately claiming the 2022 FIA World Rallycross Championship title.

The championship marked his fourth World RX title and demonstrated the ability of Kristoffersson Motorsport to develop competitive machinery and succeed in a new generation of rallycross.

Continued Success in the Electric Era 2023

The 2023 season continued in the new electric era of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, with Johan Kristoffersson and Kristoffersson Motorsport further refining the Volkswagen Polo RX1e. After the successful introduction of the car in 2022, the focus shifted toward improving performance, reliability, and consistency across the championship.

Kristoffersson once again proved to be the driver to beat. Throughout the season he combined strong qualifying performances with consistent results in the finals, maintaining a high level of competitiveness across the championship rounds.

By the end of the season, he secured another FIA World Rallycross Championship title, marking his fifth world championship and further strengthening his position as one of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport.

The season highlighted both the continued development of the electric rallycross project and the strength of the Kristoffersson Motorsport operation in the evolving landscape of the championship.

Battle of Technologies – Return to Combustion 2024

In 2024 the FIA World Rallycross Championship introduced the “Battle of Technologies” concept, allowing electric and combustion-powered cars to compete directly against each other. For Johan Kristoffersson and Kristoffersson Motorsport (KMS), this opened the door to a new technical challenge.

The team decided to return to combustion power, developing a new version of the Volkswagen Polo RX built and prepared by KMS. The project required designing and building new cars within a short timeframe, while ensuring they could compete directly against the existing electric RX1e machines.

Throughout the season, the championship became a direct comparison between the two technologies. Kristoffersson and KMS quickly proved the competitiveness of the combustion package, consistently fighting at the front against the electric rivals.

The season added another chapter to Kristoffersson’s career — not only competing for victories, but also helping shape a unique period in rallycross where two different technologies battled head-to-head on equal terms.

Adapting to Win – The 2025 Season

The 2025 FIA World Rallycross Championship became one of the most dynamic seasons of Johan Kristoffersson’s career. Kristoffersson Motorsport began the year continuing with the combustion-powered Volkswagen Polo KMS 601 RX, the car that had proven successful in the “Battle of Technologies” format.

However, after the opening round in Portugal it became clear that the competitive balance between the technologies had shifted. The electric cars showed a strong advantage, and the team made the strategic decision to switch back to the electric Volkswagen Polo RX1e from the second round of the season onward.

The change proved decisive. With the electric car, Kristoffersson regained strong momentum in the championship, delivering consistent results and victories throughout the remaining rounds. His main rival, Niclas Grönholm, pushed the title fight deep into the season, but Kristoffersson’s consistency in the final events secured the advantage.

By the end of the season, Kristoffersson once again emerged as FIA World Rallycross Champion, adding another title to his record after a year defined by adaptability, technical decisions, and a close championship battle.

The 2025 campaign demonstrated not only speed on track, but also the ability of Kristoffersson Motorsport to adapt quickly to changing conditions — switching technology mid-season and still delivering a championship-winning performance.
